Try a handpan in Athens: Alex Adamos

MMM certifiedBy appointment only

Alex Adamos has worked as a yoga teacher for ten years at the first vegan hotel in Greece and teaches handpan in Athens as a certified Malte Marten Method teacher. He discovered the instrument through one of Malte Marten's songs in a sound meditation, and today he plays handpan at the end of every yoga class.

I play the handpan during Shavasana at the end of the yoga class. For some people it is quite an emotional moment, one they weren't expecting.

Trying a handpan at Alex Adamos

Alex teaches individual and group lessons on the D Kurd and gives occasional workshops. His first tip comes straight from Malte: touch the note as if it were a hot stove you don't want to burn yourself on, and draw the sound out of the handpan instead of pushing it in. As soon as people try it, Alex says, the whole room starts smiling.

He remembers his own start well: on the first day he couldn't get a single nice sound, so he took a break, came back the next day and explored which part of the finger works on which part of the note. Tell us which models you would like to try. Visits by appointment only.

Questions for Alex

How do yoga and handpan go together?

Alex plays during Shavasana, the resting phase at the end of a yoga class. The vibrations combined with a relaxed body often bring up feelings participants didn't expect, and many tell him it is their favourite part.

What if I can't get a nice sound at first?

Alex couldn't either on his first day. Two images help: touch the note like a hot stove, and draw the sound out rather than pushing it in.
