Julie Follin has played handpan for six years and taught it for three, based in Rochefort in south-west France. She worked as a therapist before the handpan, brought the instrument into her sessions and saw what it did for people. Today she teaches as a certified Malte Marten Method teacher, travels across France for workshops and retreats, and describes herself in three words: solar, funny, generous.

Trying a handpan at Julie Follin

Julie's lessons feel close to a therapeutic session: relaxed, with room for emotions. You start with your first notes and usually end the first session playing melodies together, which surprises most beginners. Julie likes to explain the details, such as which part of the finger meets which part of the note for the best sound.

Questions for Julie

Do I need a musical background for lessons with Julie?

No. Julie is convinced that everyone can get a sound out of a handpan, whatever their background. Most of her students play simple melodies together by the end of the first session.

Where does Julie like to play?

In the forest or anywhere in nature, with her eyes closed, listening to the animals around her. A practical bonus: in the shade the handpan is protected from direct sun.
