The Ayasa D Aegean 18 is a handpan of rare and immediate beauty - spacious, luminous, and quietly mysterious. Built on an extended D Lydian scale and anchored by a remarkably deep B2 bass note, it combines the airy brightness that the Aegean scale is loved for with a tonal depth and range that few instruments at this level can match. This is a handpan that opens up the moment you touch it- and reveals new layers the longer you play.

For Intermediate and Advanced Players

The Aegean scale occupies a unique place in the handpan world. Though it carries a major feel, it actually begins on the 6th degree of a natural minor scale - giving it a character that is simultaneously familiar and fresh. What makes it truly special is what it omits: by leaving out the 2nd and 6th degrees of the full scale, it creates an open, floating quality that feels both melodic and quietly mysterious. Bright and lyrical, yet with an undercurrent of depth that invites real exploration.

The D Aegean 18 takes that character and expands it significantly. The deep B2 ding adds an extraordinary low-end layer and presence that the standard Aegean simply does not have. Above it, the top notes shimmer and sing with the scale's characteristic Mediterranean clarity, while the extended bottom register opens the full harmonic range of the instrument. The result is a handpan equally suited to deep meditative moods and expansive melodic exploration - capable of holding both in a single session.

Sound and Build

Every Ayasa handpan is shaped using a standardised deep-draw method - a process refined over more than a decade - that ensures a consistent shell thickness across the entire instrument. This precision is the foundation of Ayasa's signature sound: clear, balanced, and resonant across every note field, with a full low register and bell-like precision in the upper tones.

The D Aegean 18 is crafted from Ayasa's proprietary Ember Steel - a stainless steel alloy developed in-house that produces a distinctly warm, rounded tone with exceptional sustain. Ember Steel is also notably more resilient to temperature and humidity changes than standard nitrided steel, making it an ideal material for players who perform outdoors or in varying conditions. Its characteristic bronze patina deepens naturally over time, giving each instrument a visual warmth that is entirely its own.

About Ayasa Instruments

Ayasa Instruments was founded in the Netherlands by Ralf van den Bor, who began his journey with steel in 2013 after becoming captivated by the handpan's unique ability to move people. After 18 months of intensive research, prototyping, and refinement, the first Ayasa series was born.

Over a decade later, Ayasa has grown into one of the most respected handpan makers in the world, built by a small, dedicated team that values depth of craft over volume of production. The focus has always been the same: consistency, improvement, and the pursuit of the best possible sound. Ayasa instruments are known for their distinctly crystalline, balanced tone - warm and full in the low register, precise and singing in the upper notes.

Beyond their own instruments, Ayasa is the world's leading manufacturer of handpan shells, supplying makers worldwide with the highest quality steel since 2017 - including their proprietary Ember Steel, which has become one of the most sought-after materials in the handpan community globally.

Additional Notes

  • The visual appearance may differ slightly from the example image, as each Ayasa handpan is individually handcrafted and can stains from production.
  • The Ember Steel patina may shift and deepen over time - this has no impact on sound or tuning.
  • To maintain the surface, clean the handpan after each use and store it in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area - not inside the bag.
