The Mudra F# Low Pygmy 21 is one of the most immersive handpan experiences available. The Pygmy is one of the oldest and most iconic scales in the handpan world - instantly recognizable by its haunting, otherworldly quality and this instrument takes it to its most expansive form. With 21 notes spread across top and bottom, tuned to the lower F# register for added warmth and gravitas, and crafted with the exceptional precision that Mudra is known for, this is a handpan that invites you to get lost in sound.

For Intermediate and Advanced Players

The Pygmy scale is built on a pentatonic structure, missing the 4th and 6th degrees of the minor scale. This reduced note set creates something paradoxical: fewer notes, but a wider pitch range and a stronger sense of harmonic unity. Because every note outlines a single consistent chord, the sound is deeply resonant and cohesive - every combination of tones feels intentional, every passage feels complete.

The low notes on the bottom side gives this instrument a distinctly grounded, darker quality compared to its top side. The notes feel lower and fuller, the tone fields carry more weight, and the overall sound has an earthy, meditative depth that draws players inward. This layout opens the full harmonic range of the instrument - from deep, resonant low tones all the way into the upper register - enabling complex compositions, rich improvisation, and a musical palette that feels genuinely limitless.

Unlike scales such as Kurd or Amara, the Pygmy begins with a second interval from the ding, giving it its signature chromatic feel. This is not a scale that sounds like anything else. It is immediately recognizable - and immediately captivating. Due to the high note density on both top and bottom, it is recommended for players who already have some experience with the handpan.

Sound and Build

Every Mudra handpan is crafted from their own developed stainless steel - a material selected and developed specifically for its acoustic properties. The result is a sound that is clear, consistent, and velvety, with beautiful harmonics, a warm fundamental tone, and a sustain that fills the room. The surface finish is precise and smooth, with a tactile quality that responds naturally to different playing techniques.

The F# Low Pygmy produces a sound that is haunting, open, and deeply atmospheric. The bottom notes gives it an earthiness and weight that the standard Pygmy tunings do not carry - notes bloom slowly, sustain fully, and decay with a warmth that continues to resonate long after the hands have lifted. With 21 notes, the instrument covers an extraordinary tonal range, giving the player everything needed for meditative solo playing, layered compositions, and performances that hold an audience in complete stillness.

Each Mudra handpan is individually handcrafted and passes through a meticulous tuning process before leaving the workshop - ensuring that every note, overtone, and resonance meets the maker's exacting standards.

About Mudra Handpan

Mudra Handpan was founded by Rafael Ortega, a musician and builder from Brazil whose journey to the handpan began after years as a music producer, composer, and explorer of acoustics and psychoacoustics. His first encounter with the instrument reignited a passion for music in its purest form - and led him to study its fabrication from the ground up.

Today, Mudra is one of the most respected handpan makers worldwide, with instruments played by professional musicians and artists worldwide. Mudra also develops and supplies its own shells for makers worldwide under the Mira brand - a further testament to the technical precision and materials knowledge that underpins everything the workshop produces.

Additional Notes

  • The visual appearance may differ slightly from the example image, as each Mudra handpan is individually handcrafted.
